Clients typically engage me for my no-nonsense approach to tax advice. I'm not afraid to give an opinion on the best route forward, considering all aspects - including commercial and other issues. Having trained at HMRC and latterly spent years leading teams in private practice, I am able to advise on the risk of uncertain approaches or where the tax legislation is unclear whilst taking the pragmatic and sensible route forward.

I act across the entire range of company taxation and I am often instructed on technical disputes with HMRC. This means I can be engaged on an ad-hoc, project focused basis. However, I also act on retainer for some businesses and accountants who value having an on-going relationship. My fees are generally fixed so there is certainty as to what I am providing at the outset. All fees are completely transparent and agreed before work is commenced.

Some recent successes I have had include:

• Defended R&D tax relief claims for a professional rugby club, a waste recycling business, and a medical research company.
• Implemented pre-sale company restructuring for two different companies to access valuable tax reliefs and save in excess of £10m of corporation tax. 
• Implemented a capital reduction demerger to facilitate investment into one part of a business.
• Defending a capital gains tax roll-over relief claim where HMRC argued the new asset was a wasting asset for a farming client because of the technical analysis relating to leases and farming business tenancies.

I am a Chartered Tax Adviser who trained with HM Revenue and Customs to become a Senior Tax Inspector. I led compliance teams and provided technical support across a range of tax issues within the Revenue, before becoming a technical advisor to the anti-avoidance governance board. More recently, in practice I have led corporate tax and R&D teams providing tax advisory services. Outside of tax, I am a music loving petrolhead. I have a sports bike and car and enjoy travelling through Europe as often as I can. I play cricket for a village team and have an interest in amateur astronomy.
