Background

I studied tax law at the University of Cape Town at post-graduate level, under the guidance of a preeminent Tax Advocate (barrister). The unique aspect of tax law in South Africa is that at the time they had both a common law (English law) and a Roman-Dutch or civil law system. This provided me with unique insights into how law and specifically tax law principles applied in different international jurisdictions.

I have worked predominantly in the United Kingdom, however, I have been involved in transfer pricing projects, namely between the UK and the USA where the application of common versus civil law approaches to tax law and an understanding of the legal system underpinning each jurisdiction was essential in advising corporate clients.

Areas of focus

I switched to private client work when I realised that taxpayers in the UK, subject to the self-assessment reporting system, were underserved by compliance focussed accountancy practices who did not necessarily provide specialist advice around employee and share-based payments structures. I expanded into crypto and foreign exchange (FX) trading activities, mainly due to my experience at Travelex as the global controller for the Cash Passport product that was sold off to Mastercard in 2010.

Fees arrangements

My fees are generally based on a fixed fee arrangement. I will initially provide a no-obligation 30-minute consultation (via phone call or Zoom / Teams) to understand the background and context of each case and then once the onboarding and engagement process has been determined, produce the report or computations to support the self-assessment tax return completion or issue a report and advice on the structure or tax risk management issues to mitigate.
