Self-employed tax consultant (CTA (Fellow), ATT) with over 30 years' tax experience and able to advise on all direct tax matters.

I started over 30 years ago at the Inland Revenue before my first professional role in a local Sheffield practice. My first major role after qualifying as a CTA was in London where I was primarily responsible for the corporation tax affairs of the Decca Group, subsequently subject to various takeovers. I have since held senior roles at Saffery Champness, Macintyre Hudson and DTE in Bury. After a brief sojourn working as tax manager for a Scottish firm, I returned to Lancashire where I now mainly advise professional firms on client tax issues as a self-employed tax consultant. I also advise individuals and companies across the spectrum of UK direct tax issues: income tax, corporation tax and capital gains tax and aspects of stamp duty, SDLT and IHT.

I work from home in Poulton Le Fylde and from offices in Lytham and can give personal advice locally in Lancs/NW & nationally by email/phone/post.

I have written numerous articles for professional magazines and currently write regularly for Tax Insider. I am also author of 'Employment Related Securities and the Unlisted Company' published by Spiramus, now in its 3rd edition. Until recently I was also an examiner for the Institute of Taxation for several years.

My experience is very varied and includes the gamut of what I would call transaction work: sales & acquisitions of businesses/companies, company reorganisations, mergers/demergers, MBOs, earn-outs and company purchase of own shares

In addition to the specialisms listed I would also mention CGT matters including entrepreneur's relief, incorporation relief, gift relief, holdover elections, private residence relief.

I also advise on employee share awards and other employment tax issues including EMI options, partly informed by writing the above publication.

Advice on SEIS private company investments often goes hand in hand with advise on EIS as listed below. And not forgetting advice on the Statutory Residence Test as part of ‘Residence and non-residence issues’.

I can draft or assist in any HMRC clearances (both statutory and informal), where required, for any of the above, including applications for EIS/SEIS Advance Assurance; and I have a very good track record of presenting and winning arguments with HMRC on technical issues.

I offer a prompt, friendly service at reasonable fees.
