I am a chartered accountant with over 18 years experience in commercial organisations advising on UK & international tax matters. This has given me a thorough understanding of the wants and needs of a business from their tax adviser - being simplicity, clarity, as much certainty as possible but also an ability to communicate in simple English to the non-tax person.
I understand the drivers behind tax planning for companies (and the issues that this can raise for an organisation) from first-hand experience from my numerous roles within several FTSE 50 companies including Shell, Cadbury Schweppes and Shire Pharmaceuticals. Many of these drivers are not tax driven.
I have advised and implemented many UK & international tax planning initiatives saving hundreds of millions of pounds of tax worldwide. My wide experience includes M&A, due diligence, restructuring, financing, leasing, compliance, transfer pricing and VAT, together with day to day general corporate tax advice.
Using not only my extensive tax knowledge but also my wide business experience (the interactions of tax, treasury and accounting for instance) I can see beyond the potentially narrow tax effects of planning and can ensure that any tax planning initiatives work both within the tax environment but also work for all other areas of the business. I understand that tax is not the only driver for a business but is complementary and value enhancing to the commercial/non-tax drivers.
I can also use my considerable project management and implementation skills to ensure that any plans are effectively implemented with the minimum of surprises within the agreed time frame to ensure the best result is obtained for the client with minimal disruption to the commercial activity. I am also happy to act as an interim Head of Tax for organisations both setting up a tax department for the first time and requiring the need for an experienced person to fill a short term vacancy in an existing team.
