Tax Newsletter 25 AugHMRC staff and its computer system do make mistakes, but the HMRC penalty machine will grind on regardless and issue penalties to the taxpayer. We have tips on how to deal with penalties for apparent late filing of forms P35 and P11D(b). We also have a warning about an impending payment date for tax due under the new disguised remuneration rules which affect more people than you might expect.
If your clients have been affected by the recent riots in England do draw their attention to the help offered by HMRC and consider when to approach them on clients' behalf. More usually HMRC tend to challenge business owners who attempt to reduce their tax bills, particularly by splitting their business in order to avoid VAT. We have some tips on how to resist such a challenge. There is also a new version of form 17 to declare unequal interests in jointly held property, and some new HMRC guidance on this matter.

Finally we have news of another round of reorganisation of CT offices and iXBRL tagging issues.

This references a forthcoming disclosure opportunity to crack down on individuals and businesses who are trading above the VAT threshold but who have not yet registered for VAT. We have some advice on this and also about Agent account managers. And we've provided details of a recent case that deserves a wider audience.
